Item 1:
Introduction of the New Members of the EFCE-WPM and Memory of Passed Members of the EFCE-WPM.
Prof. P. Ditl a Chairman of the EFCE-WPM introduced new delegates of the WPM from Switzerland Dr. F. A. Streiff (Koch-Glitsch AG, Winterthur) and Prof. T. Meyer (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausane).
He remembered Prof. L. L. van Dierendonck, the Dutch member of the EFCE-WPM who passed away in autumn 1998. Prof. Dierendonck belonged to the outstanding experts in mixing technology of chemical processing and was considered as a very active and accepted member of the EFCE-WPM.
Item 2:
Adoption of the Minutes of the WPM Meeting held in Sozopol (Bulgaria) in the House of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on June 6th, 1998.
No amendments were requested. The Minutes were approved and adopted.
Item 3:
Activities of the Mixing Subject Group of the IChemE.
Prof. J. M. Smith informed the EFCE-WPM delegates about the recent activities of the Mixing Subject Group of the IChemE:
1. Student competition of the research work in Mixing (7 papers presented).
2. Organisation of the UK Conference on Mixing “Fluid Mixing VI” in Bradford on July 7 – 8, 1999.
The delegates appreciated the mentioned activities of the IChemE Subject Group on Mixing both on the undergraduate and on the graduate level. The Conference gave an excellent experience about a few academic-industrial collaborations in mixing technology in UK.
Item 4:
Recommended Symbols, Terms and Units in Mixing within Europe.
There were no comments to the final version of the Proposal (The 5th Draft) “Recommended Symbols, Terms and Units in Mixing within Europe”. The delegates approved the 5th Draft as an official document of the EFCE-WPM (see enclosed Booklet).
The Booklet will be distributed among all three EFCE Secretariats with proposal to consider it as an official document of the EFCE to be distributed among other EFCE-WPœ as well as among the main journals of chemical engineering in Europe (e.g. Chemical Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering Journal, Transactions of the IChemE, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Quarterly, Biochemical Engineering Journal). Prof. H. Van den Akker is kindly asked to recommend to all the authors of the papers to be presented at the 10th European Conference on Mixing (Delft, 2000) to follow the nomenclature of their contributions according to approved Booklet.
Item 5:
EFCE Projects on “Sustainable Technologies”.
Prof. P. Ditl attended EFCE Joint Meeting held on March 25, 1999 in Frankfurt am Main which was focused on participation of WP´s in future plausible EFCE Projects on “Sustainable Technologies”. Prof Westerterp would like to EFCE to be involved in this project.
The definition of “Sustainable technology” is given in Enclosure 1.
Prof. Ditl would greatly appreciate help of all the EFCE-WPM members to answer the questions posed by Prof. Westerterp in this matter (see Encl. 2). The comments should be sent by e-mail (ditl @fsid.cvut.cz) or by fax as soon as possible. It is expected in the future mutual cooperations of the EFCE-WP´s in organisation of Joint Meetings and Symposia on applications of chemical engineering R and D for industrial needs of the sustainable technologies.
Item 6:
Activities of the Industrial Committee within the EFCE - WPM.
Dr. J. Bertrand a Chairman of the Industrial Committee within the EFCE - WPM proposed to organize on the occasion of some International Conference of Chemical Engineering a Symposium on Application of Mixing Technology on Prediction, Construction and Design of Equipment in Chemical and Food Industry. Such a Symposium would not be delt with currently used topics in Mixing (e.g. mixing of liquids, mixing of solid-liquid systems, etc.) but according to applications of mixing in industry (e.g. heat transfer operations, mass transfer operations, applications of the CFD at mixing in industrial operations, etc.).
The delegates approved a nomination of Dr. F. A. Streiff as a member of the Industrial Committee within the EFCE-WPM.
Item 7:
Activities of the Conference Committee within the EFCE - WPM.
Dr. I. Foøt a Chairman of the Conference Committee within the EFCE - WPM prepared a “List of Conferences on Mixing and Sessions on Mixing of the Conferences of Chemical Engineering in 1999” (see Enclosure 3). The delegates discussed insufficient coordinations of many research Meetings all over the world and they felt that the only way to coordinate properly such events means to organise them by official national or international bodies (e.g. National Societies of Chemical Engineers, EFCE, AICHE, etc.) where the high probability of their cooperation exists. Delegates appreciated that the local Conferences on Mixing took place in 4 Countries of Europe and the Sessions on Mixing were parts of 5 Chemical Engineering Conferences in Europe in 1999.
Item 8:
Activities of the Awards Committee within the EFCE - WPM.
Prof. J. M. Smith a Chairman of the Awards Committee within the EFCE - WPM informed the WPM Delegates about problems with finding support for both Recognition and Young Workers Awards. He expressed his hope that information about the Call for Proposals for the nominees of the Young Workers Award on the EFCE-WPM Web Page (see Item “Miscellaneous”) can bring chances to all the Technical Universities to make proposals for such award.
The delegates discussed broadly the above mentioned proposals and they recommended to the Chairman of the 10th European Conference on Mixing Prof. H. Van den Akker to include to the Conference Programme an oral Session for young researchers (probably not longer than half a day) as a base of the selection of the nominees for the Award of the Young Workers. The delegates expect that the first nomination for the Recognition Award (with a prize financed from the profit of the European Mixing Conference) will be arranged on the occasion of the 10th European Conference on Mixing as well. Prof. Ditl will make clear the problems of funding of both awards with the Chairman of the 10th European Conference on Mixing Prof. H. Van den Akker.
Item 9:
WPM Event in 2000.
The 10th European Conference on Mixing (the 614th Event of the EFCE) will be held on July 2 - 5, 2000 in Delf (The Netherlands). The Chairman of the Conference Prof. H. Van den Akker with the Institute of Technology in Antwerpen (Belgium) organize distribution of the 1st Announcement and Call for Papers of the Conference (the deadline for abstracts of submitted papers is August 1st, 1999). All the papers presented at the Conference will be available at the venue of the meeting. There will be space for a small number of exhibitions stands of the Conference.
The delegates discussed the Conference Programme and they appreciated selected topics of the Meeting, especially industrial applications. The EFCE-WPM Meeting in 2000 is expected to take place during the Conference.
Item 10:
WPM Events in 2001.
Prof. J. M. Smith informed the delegates about organization of the Mixing Meeting in UK in September or October 2001. Another possibility of the EFCE-WPM Event in 2001 seems to be the 3rd European Congress of Chemical Engineering to be held in Nürnberg (Germany) in June 2001.
Delegates decided to make a final decision about the EFCE-WPM Event next year on the occasion of the WPM Meeting in Delft.
Item 11:
Miscellaneous.
Dr. J. Gyenis presented in absence a report on the recent activities of the WP on Mixing of the Hungarian Societies of Chemical Engineers. The delegates appreciated that the both organisations in Hungary, working on field of mixing, have decided to join their effort to organise common meetings in the future.
Prof. M. Kraume informed the WPM delegates that the 11th European Conference on Mixing will be held in Bamberg (Germany, Bavaria) in Autumn 2003.
Prof. P. Ditl attended the Polish Conerence on Mixing and Dr. I. Foøt attended the German Conference on Mixing “Mischvorgänge” (see Encl. 3). They both appreciated a great deal of participants as well as the papers presented from industry of very practical topics.
Prof. P. Ditl a Chairman of the EFCE-WPM informed the delegates that the Web Page of the EFCE-WPM is being in preparation. All Chairmen of the Committees within the EFCE-WPM will be soon asked for their contributions for the Internet information about the EFCE-WPM.
All delegates present expressed their thanks to the organisers of the “Fluid Mixing VI” Conference for their kind hospitality during the Conference and arrangement of a suitable room for the WPM Meeting.
