Item 1: Adoption of the Minutes of the WPM Meeting held in Prague (Czech Republic) on August 28, 2002. No amendments were requested. The Minutes were approved and adopted. Dr. I. Foøt remembered that all the Minutes from Meetings of the EFCE-WPM are listed on the EFCE-WPM web pages www.efce.org or www.efce.cz/wpm. Item 2: Activities of the WP on Mixing (Mischvorgänge) of the German Society of Chemical Engineers (GVC.VDI). Prof. M. Kraume (German delegate in the EFCE-WPM) presented a report on the activities of the WP on Mixing (Mischvorgänge) of the German Society of Chemical Engineers (GVC.VDI) within the period 2003 - 2004. The delegates appreciated successful effort of the German WPM to prepare and organize the 11 European Conference on Mixing. Main points of the report are summarized in the Enclosure 1. Item 3: Activities of the WP on Mixing of the Polish Society of Chemical Engineers. Prof. J. Baldyga (Polish delegate in the EFCE-WPM) presented a report on the recent activities of the WP on Mixing of the Polish Society of Chemical Engineering. The delegates discussed the report and appreciated an extent as well as the professional level of the Polish National Conference on Mixing held in 2002. Main points of the report are summarized in the Enclosure 2. Item 4: Activities of the Fluid Mixing Process Subject Group of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK). Prof. M. Yianneshis (British delegate in the EFCE-WPM) presented a report on the recent activities of the Fluid Mixing Processes Subject Group (FMPSG) of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK). The delegates discussed the report and appreciated above all the successful effort of the FMPSG to contribute to education of postgraduate students in mixing R a D via their meeting and competition. Main points of the report are summarized in the Enclosure 3. Item 5: Activities of the Conference Committee within the EFCE-WPM. Dr. I. Foøt a Chairman of the Conference Committee within the EFCE-WPM prepared a "List of Conferences on Mixing and Sessions on Mixing of the Conferences of Chemical Engineering in 2003" (see Enclosure 4). Delegates discussed the List and expressed their positive opinion on increasing number of the local Conferences on Mixing in various European countries. Dr. Foøt pointed out that new branches of mixing technology have appeared recently and they are reflected in specialized Conferences, e.g. the IMRET 7 Conference in Switzerland. Item 6: Activities of the Awards Committee within the EFCE-WPM. Prof. F. Magelli a Chairman of the Awards Committee within the EFCE-WPM laid down a proposal of the Award Committee for the EFCE-WPM 2003 Young Workers Award to Ms. Joëlle Aubin (France) and the Recognition Award to Prof. A.W.Nienow (UK) (see Encl.5) Both Awards were announced and granted on the occasion of the 11th Conference on Mixing in Bamberg under sponsorship of the amount of 1,000.- Euros for each of the two awards from the Company EKATO, Schopfheim (Germany). Item 7: Conference ISMIP 5. The EFCE-WPM Event in 2004 "The 5th International Symposium on Mixing in Industrial Processes " (ISMIP 5) will be held in June 1 - 4, 2004 in Sevilla (Spain) . Conference website: http://www.ismip5.com. Dr. J. Bertrand a Co-Chairman of the Conference informed the delegates about the preparation of the Event (see Enclosure 6). So far more than 80 papers have been submitted for the Conference, nevertheless the dead line for their submission was postponed until the end of October 2003. Delegates discussed the above mentioned information and appreciated the EFCE-WPM contribution to the industrial development of mixing technology. They agreed that the EFCE-WPM Meeting in 2004 will be held on the occasion of the Conference ISMIP 5. Item 8: WPM Events in 2005. Delegates discussed two proposals for EFCE-WPM Events in 2005: Fluid Mixing Conference VIII in London (UK) suggested by Prof. M. Yianneshis and Polish National Conference on Mixing in Warszawa (Poland) suggested by Prof. J. Baldyga. They came to conclusion that final decision will be made in 2004 in Sevilla during the EFCE-WPM Meeting. Item 9: Election of a new Chairman of the EFCE-WPM. Prof. P. Ditl decided to resign from chairmanship of the EFCE-WPM to the date of December 31st, 2003, because he has reached sixty years and feels that the European WP on Mixing needs fresh breeze and some changes. He suggested as a candidate for this position Dr. J. Bertrand from France. Delegates broadly discussed the proposal, especially from the point of view of the future of the EFCE-WPM. Dr. Geisler pointed out that new approaches in Chemical Engineering R a D, e.g. sustainable development bioengineering, micro- and nanomixing, should be included in the technical programme (objectives) of the EFCE-WPM. Dr. J. Bertrand expressed his main ideas of the successful and effective future of the European WPM (see Enclosure 7). Prof. T. Mayer mentioned that the EFCE-WP on Chemical Reaction Engineering elected its Chairman and Secretary every four years to give chance to modify its programme and objectives more frequently. Prof. J. M. Smith pointed out that generally in Europe the role of the Chairman and Secretary of the EFCE-WPM is an important and long term period. After discussion Dr. J. Bertrand was elected unanimously as a new Chairman of the WP on Mixing of the EFCE from January 1st, 2004. The delegates approved Prof. P. Ditl as an Honorary Chairman and Dr. I. Foøt as an Honorary Secretary of the EFCE-WPM for life. Item 10: Miscellaneous. Dr. F. Streiff informed the delegates about his intention to give up his membership in the EFCE-WPM in the near future because his professional interests are changing. The delegates expressed their hope that he would postpone his decision as late as possible. Prof. M. Kraume informed the Meeting about Panel Discussion of the coming 11th European Conference on Mixing with participants from research, manufacturers of mixers and chemical industry. The delegates expressed their many warm thanks to Prof. Kraume for careful and long time preparation of the Conference in Bamberg. Mathias Kraume Enclosure 2 Report on the activities of the WPM of the WPM of the Polish Society of Chemical Engineering
Permanent participants of the Working Party Mixing of Poland come from universities and research centers including Warsaw University of Technology, Technical University of Szczecin, Technical University of £ódŸ, Technical University of Kraków, Technical University of Poznañ, Technical University of Koszalin, University of Opole, University of Olsztyn, Polish Academy of Science, Gliwice. There are 15 permanent members from these groups; there are not any permanent participants from industry, but representatives of industry are invited to participate in Organizing and Scientific Committees of events organized by WPM. Members of WPM Poland meet together on occasions of Polish National Conferences on Mixing and Polish National Conferences on Chemical and Process Engineering. WPM organizes once per 3 years a Polish National Conference on Mixing (Ogólnopolskie Seminarium "Mieszanie"). Since last meeting of Working Party on Mixing of European Federation of Chemical Engineering (Prague, 2002) the Polish Working Party has organized the IX Polish National Conference on Mixing (IX Ogólnopolskie Seminarium "Mieszanie" in Olsztyn, Poland, 18-20 September, 2002. There was 74 presentations including plenary lectures and posters. Papers after reviewing were published in a special issue of : In¿ynieria i Aparatura Chemiczna" 2002, 41, no. 4s. During meeting members of Polish WPM decided that the next Polish National Conference on Mixing will be organized on Poznañ in 2005 and all the presentations and proceeding will be in English. Next meeting of the Polish WPM will be in June 2004 on the occasion of Polish National Conference on Chemical and Process Engineering. Enclosure 5 MIXING AWARDS 2003 Granted by the Working Party on Mixing of the EFCE Notes for the WP Mixing - Meeting of Bamberg, October 14, 2003
Forward A few years ago the WP on Mixing has established two awards for the activity in the field of mixing to be assigned every third year on the occasion of the European Conferences on Mixing - one to a junior researcher (Young Workers Award) and one to a senior researcher for 'life contribution to mixing' (Recognition Award). Though the value of these awards is especially moral, a check offered by a company is associated to it. The following requirements were decided for the first Young Workers Award and have been maintained also this time: (i) age not over 35, (ii) not more than 5 years from PhD, (iii) candidates should have done their work mainly in Europe, (iv) candidates should be still active in the field of mixing. No specific rules have been officially decided for the Recognition Award, except for the excellence of curriculum and achievements of the candidates in mixing technology. Nominations were solicited amongst the WP delegates and guests. The selection was made by the Award Committee (P. Ditl, R. Geisler, F. Magelli, H. Van den Akker). The Committee's proposals are to be approved by the WP on Mixing. Only two nominations were received for the Young Workers Award, three for the Recognition Award. Especially for the first one, the Committee would have expected more. However, in both categories all the nominees are of very high standard, so that the choice has not been an easy matter. MOTIVATION: Broad research areas in gas/liquid systems, non-Newtonian fluids, CFD/PIV/LDV in stirred reactors, mixing in micro-reactors. Alvin Nienow is perhaps most widely known for the book "Mixing in the Process Industries"; he was the prime mover in producing it and also in making the revisions for up-dating the second edition. His full publication list (which extends to over 200 refereed papers) reflects not only the work within his own group but also the extensive active collaboration he has had over the years with many research colleagues in Universities and Industrial Laboratories. He has had considerable involvement with industry and consulted widely with companies in Europe and North America. He has played a central role in heightening awareness of mixing technology when acting as initiator and Director of two long-running annual series of courses on industrial fluid mixing held in Sweden and the USA which have been attended by several industry leaders. As well as being an active researcher and excellent lecturer and teacher, he has contributed extensively to the administration that supports our profession. This has been reflected in his work, specifically for mixing, as a member of the Organising and/or Scientific Committees of every one of the European Mixing Conferences. More generally he has served on several senior Committees of the European Federation for Chemical Engineering and the corresponding organisation for Biochemical Engineering. He has also been on various committees for the BBSRC (British Biotechnology Scientific Research Council) where he has introduced an invaluable engineering dimension to discussions that threaten to be overwhelmed by bioscientists. His considerable scientific output ranges from his early work with suspensions through to his more recent interest in liquid-liquid systems and the implications of hydrodynamic forces on the success or otherwise of physically based processes. Alvin has consistently shown how the analysis of mixing operations can be furthered by the proper application of physical principles to industrial processes. This has resulted in a publication list that is widely cited, internationally renowned and provides the basis for many successful industrial applications. Alvin was educated at University College, London, where he obtained a first class honours degree followed by a Ph.D. (in 1968) and a D.Sc. (in 1980) He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (a highly prestigious award reflecting recognition from one's engineering colleagues in the UK) and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Since 1980 he has been a Professor at the University of Birmingham where he is Director of Biochemical Engineering, with Mixing in the (Bio)Process Industries as his main teaching area. The Mixing Research Group at the University of Birmingham, which he leads with distinction, has provided a unique forum for international collaboration. Workers have come from all over the world to participate for periods that vary from a few months to many years. His current research interests are: Bioreactor Transport Phenomena and Biological Response to the Processing Environment, Transport Phenomena in Agitated Reactors, Mixing in Turbulent and Rheologically-Complex Single Phase systems, Solid-Liquid Processing, including Precipitation, Gas-Liquid Processing including Foams, Liquid-Liquid Processing (including Food Spreads, phase inversion), Three-Phase (Gas-Solid-Liquid) Reactors, Four Phase Reactors (Gas-Solid-Oil-Water). For these reasons, Alvin Nienow fully merits recognition as one of our foremost researchers and educators for his contribution to the Science and Technology of Mixing. EXTENDED DEADLINE: 24 October 2003 Enclosure 7 Joël Bertrand's Contribution to the Working Party on Mixing The history of the Working Party on Mixing was firstly presented by Joël Bertrand. He described how the WP started, where the meetings took place and he cited the name of the first President, Dr Skrivanek. P. Ditl and I. Fort were then congratulated for their contributions to the WP. The WP on Mixing is one of the oldest of the EFCE, which shows the importance of this theme in the field of Chemical Engineering and within the European Federation. Its is composed of an Awards committee, an industrial committee and a conference committee. Joel Bertrand then proposed his future programme.
