Thematic group on Mixing of the French Society of Chemical Engineering Minutes of the annual meeting

This meeting was held on 29 November 2000 in Montaigu (France) in the building of VMI-Rayneri, a French manufacturer of mixing equipment. It was initiated by two thematic groups of the French Society of Chemical Engineering, mixing and processes of formulation. The aim of the meeting "Mixing and formulation of viscous fluids and pastes" was to meet industrials, researchers and manufacturers of mixing equipment to discuss of this topic ; 68 participants have attended this meeting (33 industrials, 16 manufacturers, 19 researchers). The transversal aspect of this topic has been point out through the oral presentations coming from different application fields - cosmetics (l'Oreal), ciment (Lafarge), rubbers (Hutchinson), food technology (Amora-Maillle) paints (Cray-Valley), butimen (Total-Fina-Elf).

The oral presentations have been very pedagogical and they have shown the specifities of each appliaction and their scientific and technological limits.

Some common problems have been pointed out from discussion as the difficulty of measurements of rheology of some fluids, the technological problems relatives to the mixing apparatusses but also extruders, emulsification and the importance of the formulation. Discussion has been fed by the presence of th e most French manufacturers.

A visit of VMI-Rayneri has shown us the "Centre de Test" and the special room dedicated to "flour" and "without flour". The coordinators of two other thematic groups of the "French Society of Chemical Engineering" have also attended this meeting and they have presented the future work to be done in "CAPE" and "Food Processes".

The main objective of the new group "Processes of formulation" is to favour the transverse competences and to create some new interfaces. One of the objective of this group is also to organize workshops with others thematics groups as "Food technology", "CAPE" and "Divided solids".

The future actions have been proposed :
    - organization of the workshop on emulsification (from the physico-chemistry to the scale -up)
    - each member is invited to send some topics he would discuss.

The next "rendez-vous" has been fixed at ISMIP4, 4th International Symposium on Mixing in Industrial Processes, which will be hed in Toulouse from 14 to 16 may 2001.

Report

On the activity of the WPM in Hungary

During the last year, the local WP on Mixing, together with the Chemical Engineering Section of the Society of Hungarian Chemists, as well as with WP on Chemical Engineering of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Research Institute of Chemical and Process Engineerign (Veszprem) have organised several topical meetings, where mixing and mixer devices were also involved. Beside the regular meetings of these WPs, the most important event was the usual yearly National Conference on Chemical and Process Engineering, organized between April 25-27, 2000 in Veszprém. This latter one had a broader profile than mixing alone, but several papers presented at this conference were related to mixing processes. One of the plenary lectures was dealing with teh mathematical modeling of processes (among others mixing) taking place in disperse (miltiphase) systems. Five oral papers were also related to the results obtained in the field of mixing. Some important topics are: 1. Recent results on the study on flow field and homogenization in large cylindrical tanks, applying special fluid circulation and distribution methods. 2. Adsorption and mixing processes in three-phase fluidized bed fermentors. 3. Mixing and particle flows studies on particulate solids in model silus. 4. Particle flow and mixing in aero-kinetic channels. 5. Flow pattern and mixing in rolling bed and fluidized bed granulators.

In the field of mixing, research activities in Hungary were mainly directed towards the application of static mixers in various unit operations. The related R+D projects were carried out mainly at the Research Institute od Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Kaposvar, in cooperation with various industrial partners. First of all these activities were directed to solve environmental problems by applying new types of gas-liquid circulation reactors using combined methods of static mixers, jet mixers and effective gas-liguid contacting by circulation.

The Department of Unit Operations in Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Budapest, continued their research on mechanical stirrers.
